Prolouge
The year is 2081. The greatest right my people have ever been allowed has been taken away. The right to our stories, to our books. Soilders rampaged through town, burning all the books they could find. You see, apparently us "humans" were expressing our feelings well enough, a little too well. Don't make me laugh. I was writing my book as the soilders came in. They think they can destroy all that is dear to us, but they're wrong. I'm finishing my book, and noboy's going to stop me. My name is Elizabeth Nickleson, and I'm a writer to the bitter end.

Chapter 1
I sat in my dim apartment watching the sun set over the buildings in Toronto. The vapours from my cup of tea rose to my short, black cropped hair making it feel warm. My fingers rested over my typewriter as I sit, thinking. Writing a book is complex. I didn't even know what was going to occur. My cat, Socrates walked up and scratched at my leg, giving a pitiful mew for attention. Something was disturbing my poor Tawny kitten. His eyes looked sad as I scratched under his chin. "Nothing's wrong, Socky" I whispered my kittens nickname and he seemed to lighten up. My typewriter was blank as I sat trying to think of what to write. My mind was blank, and nothing occurred. I grabbed Socrates and headed out the door for a walk. My apartment was in the middle of High Park Village, a nice place, but the neighbours didn't appear to like me. As I entered the boundries to the ancient park, I wish I brought a sweater, for the cold was slowly sinking in through my faded black Irish Knit sweater. Socrates mewed, eyes huge at our apartment. "Shhhhh..." I soothed, trying to calm the cat. "It's okay" But the cat kept on mewing, to my disappointment. I turned and looked back at my apartment. The smell of smoke hit me even before I saw the fire. My small, old 3 story apartment was burning.

Chapter 2
My legs pushed against the stairs as I dashed up two flights with my cat behind me. I fumbled with the key, trying to get into my apartment like the klutz I was. As I slammed open the door, my mind raced as I realised the only thing that wasn'y burning just yet was my beloved old typewriter. Grabbing it wasn't an easy task as I began to lift it into a case that I easily kept over my shoulder. That was an understatement. The bag was the heaviest thing I could imagine as I clomped down the stairs with Socrates following quickly. I struggled all the way, but the nauseating smell of gasoline kept me running. That was literally the begining of the end for me. My home, my possesions, all the things I kept dear to me were burn in the arson, but I was relieved that I got out alive, that I took that walk. Socrates didn't seem too pleased, but then again, why shouldn't he. His home was burnt too. As I slowly walked along the sidewalk, my head spinning I heard voices behind me. "There she is!" One called. I was a fast runner, a track star in my elementary school years, but the wieght of my typewriter held me back from full speed. What could I have done that I deserved this? I was a good kid who rarely lied, I met my deadlines and I kept away from people. The footseps grew closer as I struggled to pick up my pace. Luckily, I think I knew the city better than the thug chasing me so I rounded a corner to find a dead end. There in front of me was the great clock. The Great Clock was a huge tower, much like a modern version of the Big Ben, made in 2050 to keep the humans inside before the curfew that clung to us like our clothes in the rain. 9:00 every night, all humans must be sent indoors. It was 8:57. I noticed the small door that led to the inside of the Great Clock, and scrambled inside. There was no elevator, so the steps were grueling so I took frequent rests after I was sure that the man wasn't chasing me anymore. When I got to the top and opened the door, there was the most spectacular scene I'd ever seen.
